Gothic Victorian Decorating Theme

We're not going to recommend straight black or red walls, because you very quickly drown out the intricate features that create a feel of luxury with a Gothic Victorian style. Patterns, textures, colors, and delicate accents are important to include in this theme.

Think jewels and texture - Emeralds, Sapphires, Rubies, Amethysts, Pearls, etc. Wallpaper and coverings were popular to show a sense of wealth by helping to fill a room. Some wallpapers have raised embellishments, such as spiral designs, stones, or flowers. We have run into a deep burgundy wallpaper that feels like velvet. If you prefer paint, use a sponging technique between two close colors. Shades of light gray or tan will give them a stone or marble look, and then you can add a pearlescent effect with a specialty stain for accents such as baseboards and crown mouldings. Ceilings should be lighter than walls, so as not to interfere with the height or architecture of a room. Our favorite look is an ornate chandelier in the middle of the room, with designs painted on the ceiling around the base (which almost blend into the ceiling color). Designs are also commonly included in each corner of the ceiling. If you can't paint, cut designs from wallpaper or use stencils.

If you want a bright wide-open look, include a major lighting source, plus table lamps and wall sconces. Candles, candles, and more candles should be placed around the room to highlight your favorite features and decorations. Invest in a candelabra or ten. Although we love to include subtle hints of flowers and lace in the room, we prefer the more masculine look that was portrayed in the early era. Use heavy tapestries, from brocade to velvets, and rich dark wood features, patterned floors, and large furniture with thick wood designs around all of the edges.

For a bedroom, large dark wood furniture was popular: four-poster beds with canopies, vanities with huge mirrors, and full figured armoires. We are firm believers in do-it-yourself projects, considering we hand make all of our products... Create your own additions to your existing furniture or cluster them together. The most unique idea we've seen was sliding a few bookshelves together then draping over a heavy velvet cloth in front to use for a headboard. A few well placed items on top, and a string of garland with roses around the edges was both romantic and dramatic.

Be sure to pay close attention to your decorating and fill each area. Shelves should be crowded with everything from books to picture frames and china. Tablecloths, lace doilies, drawstrings for your curtains, stuffed but not overcrowded. There is a point where one can do too much and throw off the whole balance. Keep the crap hidden away - paperwork, CDs, magazines - anything that doesn't seem to fit in, to keep it elegant.
