Creepy Cribs - Gothic Baby Nursery Decorating Theme One misconception of being a Gothic parent is that you would force them to be just like you, scared and shivering in a corner because of the skull decorations all over the walls. We're usually up all night anyways, so of course we'd want to keep our kids up at night with us...Our whole unique perception and lifestyle is based on tolerance of individuality and would no less apply to our children, including decorating for and/or with them. Kids are fascinated by what their parents enjoy, and later on create their own sense of style no matter what you do. Our children may grow up and wear white all the time, thus making us have to buy our first bottle of bleach. 2006: Our son is 1 years old and loves "fishies" and the color orange. We're lucky because he chooses things like pumpkins, tigers, clown fish, and Halloween stuffed animals, which blend nicely with our surroundings. He is amazed by much of our decor, which includes stone figurines, feather masks, plants, black roses, dragons, and many of my creative projects lying around. His nursery looks like any other baby's, plus a few decorational gifts from Mommy, Daddy, and family that makes him feel included. For Colors: Because pastels are probably at the very bottom of your list, you can choose to stay with the rich jewel tones you're used to create romance or maybe something a little more pale. Try a gray-based shade rather than something diluted with white; gray-purple, gray-blue, etc. Bring your child with you to the paint store and see their reaction to each sample if in doubt, or if you want to give them options. I was chastised in a store once for letting my then 6-month old choose his own famous teddy bear that's "stuffed with fluff". I showed him 2 versions before a sales associate asked why I was bothering with letting someone so young decide. "Because he knows what he likes," was my natural reply. She followed me around until the 5th bear option before he smiled and grabbed for it. I guess she just assumed that he'd like anything I chose for him, but to this day he still favors his perfect bear. If needed, replace any scary decorations with one of a kind abstract designs. Misty cemetary images may be a little boring anyways, but artwork with patterns of shapes and objects in any form or placement can be fun and creative. Hand-paint or stencil unique figures. Think Jack-o-lantern! A few triangles and circles and it puts a smile on everyone's face. :-) Celestrial and Earthen themes are easy options. Stars, planets, flowers, plants, wood, stone; natural elements that are serene. For more decorating theme ideas, search our decorating kids theme articles... Back to Full List of Articles |
