Carve Your Own Slice...Gothic Wedding Cakes There are endless posibilities for what kind of cake you can have at your Gothic wedding, but the more elegant styles that we had in mind are listed, rather than the cutsie Halloween themes that you find everywhere:Tower - Different sizes of square tiers stacked together, iced, and then carved with arched windows. Use tubed icing to outline all architectual features with tiny swirled designs. The more creative can use different colors of icing to create stained glass effects. Find a small gargoyle, bell, or flowers for a topper. Coffin - Chop off the edges of an oversized sheet cake to form the outline of a coffin. The cake will be the inside, so layer with frosting to look like sheets of satin and create a thick edge line. Include a personal touch of a small pillow, silk rose, etc. You will need to cut out a piece of heavy cardboard that is the same size as the cake. Cover it completely with frosting, with edging designs and/or sayings such as "Through Life and Death" on the front. Use long toothpicks or wooden skewers broken to size to secure the top of the coffin (half open) to the bottom piece. Cameo/Cabochon - Perfect for a Victorian theme. Large oval cake in burgandy or cream colors. Use a thick wavy stream of icing around the edges, then add lace designs to the edging with a lighter shade. Sprinkle edges with a very light dusting of sugar. If you have this done as a photo cake professionally first, it can go a long way...a photo of the couple would be quite memorable. If not, include personal touches for whatever design you would like in the middle. Garden Corset - Weaved vines from deep Emerald icing and sugared flowers over a stoned base, created with shades of gray frosting. A bench, trellis, or gargoyle shape for the cake would be ideal. Create a mini garden and/or cemetary as a picturesque landscape on the cake. Tombstone - Very simple concept, stand a flat sheet cake on a short end and trim off the top edges. Flowers surround the base and vines cascade from the topper down the sides. A select poetic portion of your vows would more tactful then R.I.P. For regular shaped cakes, dark chocolate, red velvet, and carrot cakes are good options. Deep red frosting and black roses have become more and more popular. High-tiers with arches are excellent selections to modify into your own style, should you not have the time to create one. A few tasteful garnishes here and there may help to create the look you are going for. Back to Full List of Articles |
